My Journey: Mary Wilson

We recently informed members via our Facebook and Twitter profiles that one of our members, Mary Wilson was competing in the Invictus Games in London and wished her good luck.  We are delighted to say that Mary has kindly taken the time to write a few words on her journey up to and including that point and we are grateful to her for sharing this with her fellow members.

My Journey: Mary Wilson

The Invictus Games

London 10th - 14th Sept 2014

Here is some background information to my story.  I was in the Army for 20 years as a Mental Health Nurse and during that time I was deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and most recently Afghanistan.  In 2000 I was unfortunately injured while on a military horse riding course with the Royal Horse Artillery and my bicep muscle was ripped off the shoulder.  Two unsuccessful operations later and I was left with limited movement, constant pain and arthritis in the joint. Not only that but I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2004.  The Army changed its weapon handling policy and I was medically discharged in December 2012.

Sport has always been a part of my life and when I was discharged I took up swimming again more competitively and was selected for the British Armed Forces team for the Warrior Games (Paralympic type event against the USA military in Colorado). It was a fantastic week and on returning I decided to train harder at Westwoods Health Club and also take up the shot put and discus.

Westwoods Health Club has been an excellent health club for me. I worked with Karina, one of their swimming teachers on a number of occasions and the Club even managed to arrange access to Fettes College playing fields for me to practice the field events.  I had been practising in my Dad's back garden but kept smashing his flower pots!!  I then managed to be selected for the British Armed Forces team, this time for the Invictus Games in Sept 2014.  It was initiated by Prince Harry and he invited another 13 countries to take part.  Those invited were all either wounded, injured, ill and psychologically damaged personnel as a result of serving in their respective armed forces.  It was an amazing event and was televised which was brilliant for helping raise public awareness.  The shot put and discus went very well and I was thrilled to win a Bronze medal in both events. In the swimming, I was over the moon with winning one Gold and two Bronze medals.

What I am trying to say is that no matter what disability you have (or I prefer to say less abled) you can pretty much do anything you put your mind to. Sport is good for the mind, body and soul and Westwoods Health Club helped me do just that.

Thank you.

Mary Wilson pictured with a Bronze medal in Swimming Backstroke.  Congratulations on all your achievements, Mary.

Fettes College Security

Over recent years the Governors of the Fettes Trust have become increasingly anxious as to the number of pedestrians walking though the school grounds and the apparent lack of control over who should and shouldn’t be doing so.  They recently commissioned the police to produce a review of the security on campus and highlight any areas of concern. The recommendations from this report together with a few recent incidents of theft and unauthorised use of facilities have emphasised the requirement to raise the security within the school grounds.  Enhanced security systems are currently being installed on all of the school buildings and it has been decided that the West Drive gate will be permanently locked from Monday 2nd June to avoid any pedestrian or vehicle access through this entrance.

We are fully aware that some members who live or work near the East Fettes Avenue side like to walk through the school grounds to access the facilities at Westwoods.  Unfortunately as there are many others completely unrelated to Fettes or Westwoods who are currently using this access route, the Governors, after much thought and deliberation, have decided to stop this access route for everyone except Fettes staff or pupils. I do hope that you can understand their decision regarding the paramount importance of the safety of the pupils at Fettes College.

The club would really appreciate if you could now only access Westwoods via the Crewe road south entrance. Please note that the blue lanyard that has been distributed to some members can now not be utilised to access the route via the East Fettes Avenue gates.

We realise that over the years there has been various communication regarding access and parking and we thank you for your patience and understanding where changes have had to be made.

Westwoods Splash 'N' Dash

Our 3rd Splash 'N' Dash race took place on Sunday 9th February at 1pm! The Splash 'N' Dash is a short swim in our pool followed by a run outside, which is all timed by the staff here at Westwoods. This was our first race of the year  and the idea is for members to take part regularly to try and improve their time.

You can either enter as a Novice and swim 200m followed by a one mile (1.6km) run or you can enter as an Intermediate and swim 400m followed by a two mile (3.3km) run.

In February, members took up the personal challenge in the pouring rain and howling wind. It was blizzard-like conditions outside with heavy mud underfoot but several participants who took part in the race swam and ran hard and managed to improve their times, particularly our fastest female competitor Catriona Macaulay beating her personal best from last time by several minutes! Gary Sleator our fastest male deserves a lot of credit for putting in a top effort and setting himself a time to beat for next time. For the first time we also had a ‘Mother and Son’ competing against each other.  Mum, Mandy Soppitt just beat son Colin Soppitt who was running hard to catch up. Well done to all who took part in what were testing running conditions. It's a great target to work towards and an ideal starting point if you are thinking about entering a triathlon in the future.

Our Fitness Team have programmes prepared for running and swimming that will help you to do your best in the race, so contact your Instructor to pick up a swimming programme or to have a running programme added to your gym key. If you have any questions, please contact race organiser Colin Begg or any member of the team.

Maggies to Maggies Challenge & 2013 Fundraising

Congratulations to all the members who completed the distance from Maggies Edinburgh to Maggies Fife with Swimtag in November! We can now announce that all together everyone raised just over £6000 in sponsorship, (and there are still a few donations to come in).

At our 10th Birthday bash in September last year we raised £1300 and we also managed to collect £550 at our 11th Birthday Party in the summer. The participants from Morag's Healthy Hearts class handed in £250 bringing the overall total to just over £8000.

A cheque for £8,079.81 was presented to Mark Cooper from Maggies at our Christmas Party on Saturday. This money is enough to keep the centre running for over three days! For more information on the incredible work that they do please visit their website.

In addition to all the fundraising for Maggie's we also raised £766.57 for MacMillan during our coffee morning in September and £600 for Comic Relief in March and gave raffle prizes to various charities throughout the year, bringing the total raised this year to just under £10,000. You can see a summary of all our recent charity activities on our new Charity Support Page.

Pre-Christmas Maintenance Closure

Our closure on 12th and 13th December was a great success and we hope that members will enjoy some of the improvements we've made. The most noticable changes are the new machines in the gym, the studio floor which has been sanded and varnished and the car park lines which were repainted. In addition, we also painted various areas of the club, undertook a deep clean of poolside and the changing rooms sanded down the reception and brasserie counters and fixed several electrical snags and other small repair jobs.

The studio was painted on 18th December to complete it's makeover and we have now received the new Dual Assisted Pulley machine in the gym - the final piece of the jigsaw!

Jog Scotland Leaders of the Year Award 2013

We are delighted to report that Brendan and Fiona who lead the Jog Scotland programme from Westwoods have been recongised at the Jog Scotland and Scottish Athletics Awards 2013 as the Jog Scotland Leaders of the Year 2013!  We are very proud of what Brendan and Fiona have achieved over the many years they have led these programmes from the Club and this award is richly deserved.  Brendan and Fiona were nominated by their peers which is further testament to their abilities.  Congratulations to them both!

You can read more about this story on the Jog Scotland website.

Robbie Renwick Club Visit

We were thrilled to have Robbie Renwick, Commonwealth 200m freestyle Gold medallist at your Club on Wednesday 19th June to complete a training swim in advance of his next competition which offers qualification for the World Championships later this year.

Robbie trained using a SWIMTAG wristband that all adult members have access to as part of their membership.  As Robbie is due to compete in a few days, his training was structured accordingly but he still clocked up over 2500m in around one hour of pool time.  We we are now running two competitions for members to try to beat Robbie's 200m and 400m times which he recorded whilst at the Club although we feel it is only fair to point out that these times were recorded whilst swimming over 2500m and not in isolation!!  They are still very quick! You can enter by logging in to your SWIMTAG account and clicking "compete".

Following his training, Robbie held two seperate swim coaching sessions, firstly for six lucky children who have swimming lessons at the Club and secondly for six adults who currently use SWIMTAG.

Robbie then offered a fascinating insight into his career to date during a Q&A session which included confirmation that he trains 6 days per week for up to 7 hours per day, that London 2012 was a very special experience and that he never, ever eats crisps!

A selection of photos of the event are available on the Westwoods Facebook Page (more will come back from the photographer will be with us in due course).  On behalf of the Club we would like to say a big thank you to Robbie for visiting Westwoods Health Club and we wish him the very best for the future.

SWIMTAG is Here

We are delighted to announce that we are the first club in Scotland to install SWIMTAG a revolutionary new way to track your swim!

You can pick up a SWIMTAG wristband at reception and the wristband will record your swim and upload it to the SWIMTAG website.

Using your membership card number, you can then log in to the SWIMTAG website and see your swim. The website will display the number of lengths swum, time per length, how many strokes used per length and it will also give you an idea of how many calories you have burned. It even knows which stroke you’ve been swimming!

The use of SWIMTAG is included within the cost of membership, so you won’t pay a penny more to be part of the SWIMTAG revolution!

SWIMTAG also allows you to enter competitions; set yourself challenges such as swimming the channel and there are also swimming programmes that you can download which SWIMTAG will help you follow.

After allowing members to get used to the system, this is something we will encourage, so we will be offering prizes and incentives to get involved in the swimming competitions and challenges in the coming months!

In introductory video can be viewed here. You can also visit the SWIMTAG website and see a demonstration here. But by far the best way to find out more is to come along and try it out for yourself, so why not pop in today!

Please note:

SWIMTAG is only available to current members and cannot be used by guests.

The system pairs up your wristband to your membership card number using a scanner, so if you forget your membership card we will not be able to issue a wristband.

Members will be asked to sign an agreement prior to being issued a wristband, which assumes responsibility if you take a band away from the club and do not return it.

Care Inspectorate Report - Well Done Creche Team

Every year, a representative from the Care Inspectorate (SCSWIS) can give our creche an unnanounced visit and grades us on our quality of care, quality of environment, quality of staffing, and quality of management and leadership.

Our latest inspection was on 6th March and once again, we received a glowing report which is available to view on the via the creche page.

We would like to thank our parents for their contribution and for showing us in such a good light, particularly those who filled out a questionnaire and/or spoke to the Care Inspectorate representative.

Members' Christmas Party (Adults)

Our Adults' party was once again held within Fettes College and the evening consisted of a drinks reception in the Callover Hall, followed by more drinks, party games, dancing and dinner in the main function suite, before we crowned our Members of the Year Emma Lougheed and Ian Gray. The fun went on until midnight and a fantastic time was had by all!

Business Networking Event

Our first Business Networking event took place on Thursday 14th November at 6pm. A good number of members turned out to hear a presentation by Sarah Morgan, Digital Marketing Co-ordinator for Morton Fraser Solicitors and swap business card afterwards.

We'd like to thank Sarah and Also Ian Gray from Morton Fraser for their help launching our business networking event. The members who turned out all gave us great feedback and are looking forward to the next event which will hopefully be in February.

If you are interested in networking with other members in the mean time, then you are welcome to join our LinkedIn Page.

Easter Party

Our annual Easter Party for our youngest members was a great success and including the traditional egg roll and a visit from the Animal Man!

Wine Tasting with M&S

Our latest wine Tasting Evening in conjunction with M&S Craigleith and their wine expert Robert Wright took place in March 2014 within Fettes College. Robert brought along some of his favourite wines from the M&S collection. M&S recently launched some great sparkling wines, so robert decided to bring a bit of fizz to the evening with three sparklers which were all very well received. If you would like advice on wine then Robert works in your local Craigleith store Thu - Sun from 10am - 6pm.

MacMillan Coffee Morning

A big thank you to everyone who came along to our MacMillan Coffee Morning on Friday 27th September. Thank you in particular to all the members and staff who took the time to baked some of the delicious goods on sale and to the staff who jumped on the spin bikes to help raise extra cash. In total, we raised £766.57 for MacMillan who provide support services for people with cancer every day! Well done everyone!

We will be running some competitions for members to try to beat Robbie's 200m and 400m times which he recorded whilst at the Club although we feel it is only fair to point out that these times were recorded whilst swimming over 2500m and not in isolation!! They are still very quick!
